First introduced as Jimmy in its 1982 debut, the two-door SUV was renamed Yukon in 1992; a 4-door variant was added in 1995. The 1999 model year saw the exit of the 2-door version. The all-new 2007 Yukon debuted as a 2007 model in early 2006.

For 2008, the GMC Yukon lineup features the Yukon Hybrid that promises a 25 percent improvement in overall gas mileage. Minor exterior changes make the SUV more aerodynamic, featuring a modified bumper, a grille with horizontal slats, lower side cladding and unique 18-inch wheels. The Yukon Hybrid uses a two-mode hybrid system which supplements the SUV's V-8 engine with two electric motors. Both motors get a 300-volt battery pack; one of which operates the Yukon Hybrid in city driving and the other in highway cruising. A cylinder deactivation system cuts power during downhill coasting; braking friction recharges the battery. When properly equipped, the Yukon Hybrid can tow 6,000 pounds; the regular Yukon tows up to 7,700 pounds.
